On October 22nd, within the framework of Stefania Gialdroni’s course in Legal history (Storia del diritto), we will have the honor to host Prof. Joseph (Giuseppe) Brincat (University of Malta), who will give a lecture entitled “Il diritto a Malta. La fusione di pratiche siciliane, italiane e inglesi in un contesto plurilingue”. He will then introduce the book by Micoll’s team member Davide Basaldella “Siciliano e italiano a Malta fra Quattro e Cinquecento. Edizione e commento linguistico di testi volgari dell’Archivio notarile della Valletta” Editions de Linguistique et de Philologie, 2024.
The lecture will take place at 4:30pm at the University of Padova, Palazzo del Bo, Aula E (ground floor).
Joseph Brincat is Full Professor of Italian Linguistics at the University of Malta, where he headed the Department of Italian from 1994 to 2009, and is a member of the Institute of Linguistics and the Institute of Maltese Studies. Vice President of the Society of Italian Linguistics 1998-2000. Scientific collaborator of the International Centre on Plurilingualism at the University of Udine. Awarded the rank of Commendatore in the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1995. Member of the scientific committee of various Italian and foreign journals. A frequent participant in congresses and conferences in Italy, he has held seminars and conferences in many Italian universities and institutions and organised a dozen in Malta. He has written the linguistic history of Malta, delving into the use of Italian by the Knights of Malta and its function as a high language until 1936.
